Australian Metropolitan Radio Advertising Revenues Grow by 5.6% in Fiscal 2011

 

Radio advertising revenues in the five Australian metropolitan markets increased by 5.6% to $684m in the fiscal year (FY) ending 30 June 2011, according to industry-sourced statistics compiled by accounting firm Deloitte and published by the commercial radio’s industry representation group Commercial Radio Australia.

The 5.6% growth rate in FY 2011 exceeded the historic 10 year compound annual growth rate of 4.2% in total metropolitan radio advertising revenues which the industry experienced in the decade between FY 2001 and FY 2011.

The strongest growth in radio advertising revenues during FY 2011 occurred in Perth, which saw an 8.4% increase. Above industry average revenue growth was also experienced in Brisbane (+6.5%) and Sydney (+5.9%), while Melbourne (+4.6%) and Adelaide (+2.8%) recorded below average growth in that same year.

FY 2011 was the first year since FY 2003 that radio advertising revenue growth in Sydney (at 5.9%) exceeded the growth (of 5.5%) experienced in the other four metropolitan markets on an aggregate basis. As a result, Sydney’s share of total metropolitan radio advertising revenues in FY 2011 increased marginally from 31.3% in FY 2010, back to 31.4%. This reversed an adverse trend over the preceding seven years during which Sydney’s share of total metropolitan radio advertising revenues had declined steadily from 40.9% in FY 2003 down to an all-time low of 31.3% in FY 2010.

While Sydney’s revenue share had been in steady decline between FY 2003 and FY 2010, the revenue shares of Melbourne (up 3.9%); Perth (up 3.1%) and Brisbane (up 2.7%) all increased over that same period.

Apart from Sydney, the other four metropolitan radio markets in aggregate experienced compound annual growth in advertising revenues of 5.6% in the decade ending 30 June 2011. Sydney’s comparatively low 1.7% compound annual growth rate over that decade had the effect of lowering the five market 10 year compound annual growth rate down to 4.2% .
